Diseases Shared Between People and Pets: What Is True and What Is Not

Some diseases do pass between people and their pets. What is not true is the picture many people carry: that having a cat or a dog in the house is itself a danger, and that the answer is to get rid of the animal. In reality most of what follows is prevented by a simple routine — and in the most famous of these diseases, the main source is not your pet's lap at all. It is your kitchen.

We start with the most famous and the most unfairly judged: toxoplasmosis

This is the disease over which cats are thrown out in Egypt every day. So we will take it in detail.

A cat sheds the oocysts for a very short time

Usually one to three weeks in her whole life, and usually with nothing visible about her at all.

And the oocyst is not infectious when it leaves her

This is the single most important fact here. It needs one to five days outside in the environment before it becomes infectious (CDC, in those words). Which means removing the faeces from the litter box every single day breaks the whole chain.

Stroking a cat is not a route of transmission

Not touch, not saliva, not a scratch. The route is swallowing the oocyst from soil, sand or contaminated food.

So where do people actually get it?

The largest European study of pregnant women with recent infection (six cities, published in the BMJ in 2000) attributed thirty to sixty-three percent of infections to undercooked, cured or salted meat, and six to seventeen percent to contact with soil. Contact with any cat in the house showed no statistical effect at all.

Egyptian studies have found a link with cats too

And that should be said honestly. The likeliest explanation is that cats here go out, hunt and contaminate soil and sand — so the soil itself carries the oocyst to people who have no cat at home at all.

For a pregnant woman specifically

Do not get rid of your cat and do not send her away. What the evidence actually supports is one thing: a pregnant woman should not clean the litter box — someone else who is not pregnant and has a healthy immune system should clean it daily. If you must do it yourself, wear gloves and wash your hands with soap afterwards. And the real risk is one situation only: a first, new infection during the pregnancy. A woman infected before pregnancy has protective immunity. Telling the two apart is a test and a specialist's reading, not a guess.

One question people always ask

Testing the cat's faeces or her blood does not reassure you: the shedding window is short, so a negative does not rule it out, and serology does not reliably show whether she shed in the past.

Roundworms (Toxocara)

The commonest worm in puppies and kittens, with a form in humans called larva migrans.

Its egg is also not infectious when it leaves the animal

It needs one to four weeks in soil. So the faeces picked up immediately are not the danger — old contaminated soil and sand are.

Which means it does not pass by touching or licking

It passes by swallowing the egg from soil, from hands contaminated by it, or from badly washed vegetables.

Children are the usual patients

Because they play in dirt and put their hands in their mouths. Rarely a larva reaches the eye and damages sight.

And a puppy is born infected

Toxocara canis passes from the mother before birth, and kittens are infected through the milk. So "he is still small and clean and does not need it" is wrong: deworming starts very early, on the vet's schedule.

Hydatid disease (Echinococcus)

This is where the most widespread false belief here lives, especially around Eid.

It does not come from eating the meat or the liver

That is the famous myth. The cysts in a sheep's organs do not infect people through eating.

It comes from swallowing eggs from dog faeces

The dog eats infected offal and carries the tapeworm; its eggs leave in the faeces and contaminate soil, vegetables and hands. That is how it reaches people.

And the dog carrying it looks perfectly fine

There are no signs on it at all (WHO).

So prevention

Never give raw offal to a dog, especially at slaughter time, and dispose of offal safely rather than throwing it to dogs. Deworming on veterinary advice.

Rabies

This is the part with no room for improvisation and no polite hedging. Rabies exists in Egypt, and once symptoms appear the disease is effectively fatal — yet it is entirely preventable if you act correctly and immediately.

After any bite or scratch: two steps, in order

One: wash the wound immediately with running water and soap, generously, for at least fifteen minutes (WHO's recommendation).

Two: go to a doctor or a hospital the same day. Even if the wound is trivial. Even if you feel fine.

And the threshold is wider than people think

The skin does not have to break and there does not have to be blood. WHO's classification places minor scratches and abrasions without bleeding, and nibbling of uncovered skin, among the exposures that require washing and immediate medical care. So does animal saliva on a wound, an eye or a mouth.

And not only dogs

Cats and any mammal can transmit it. In a country with a large street-cat population, that matters.

An animal that looks healthy, or is vaccinated, is not an exception

The virus can be in its saliva for days before anything shows, and CDC requires a ten-day observation even for an animal with a vaccination history.

The most dangerous sentence anyone says

"Let's wait and see whether the dog dies." No. Observation is a parallel veterinary procedure, never a reason to delay your own care.

And things that must never be done to the wound

No cauterising, no chilli, no salt, no ash, no kerosene, no herbs, none of it. Water and soap, then the doctor.

On the other side

Rabies does not pass by stroking an animal with intact skin, nor through its urine or faeces, nor through food or water a healthy animal touched.

Cat scratch disease and fleas

A bacterium called Bartonella causes swollen lymph nodes after a cat scratch or bite. It usually settles on its own, but it needs a doctor to look at it.

The real key is fleas

The bacteria pass between cats through flea faeces. So flea control is the actual prevention.

And two things not to do

Declawing is not prevention and CDC does not recommend it. And permethrin products must never be used on cats — they are toxic to them.

Fleas also carry a tapeworm

The animal swallows a flea while grooming, and a child can swallow one by accident. That worm disappears when the fleas do.

Ringworm and mange

This is the group that really does pass by direct contact.

What it looks like

A round, scaling patch on the animal or on a person. But a round shape alone is not a diagnosis — some bacterial infections look similar, so the call belongs to a doctor.

And a cat with no visible patch can still carry it

Especially kittens and long-haired cats.

Mange

It causes intense itching in people but settles by itself, because the mite cannot complete its cycle on us. The real treatment is treating the animal.

Salmonella and raw feeding

Bacterial diarrhoea can pass from animal faeces to people, and the largest known risk factor is raw feeding.

Freezing is not sterilising

Frozen or freeze-dried meat can still carry the organism, and "fresh from the butcher" is no guarantee.

And a point of honesty that concerns us

No food prevents a shared disease — ours included. FDA sampling found contamination in non-raw food too, at a far lower rate. Hygiene, hand washing and washing the bowls are what make the difference, not the brand on the bag.

A routine that prevents most of the above

None of this is complicated.

Rabies vaccination

On the schedule your vet sets. This is the most important line on the list.

Deworming on a schedule from a named authority

There is no "global number". CAPC in North America recommends monthly year-round prevention for life, with a minimum of four times a year. ESCCAP in Europe grades the animal by risk: once a year for a strictly indoor animal, up to monthly for one that goes out and hunts or a home with small children — and it states that one to three times a year does not give adequate protection. The choice belongs to your vet, not to an article.

Flea and tick control

With a product your vet prescribes — and never a random powder or collar from the market on a cat without asking.

The litter box every day

This is the step that breaks the toxoplasma cycle, and household disinfectant does not kill the oocysts, so this is about removal, not disinfection.

Hand washing

After the box, after soil and gardening, and before eating. The simplest item on the list and the strongest.

And the kitchen

Cook meat properly, wash boards and knives between foods, and wash vegetables under running water.

Who needs extra care

Care, not exclusion.

Pregnant women, small children, older people and the immunocompromised

These are the groups for whom these infections hit harder. Each of them can live safely with their animal on the same routine above, with the tasks divided: someone else cleans the box, and children learn to wash their hands after playing.

Not one case above carries the recommendation "get rid of the animal". None of these diseases passes through the animal's hair itself, and the belief that pet hair causes infertility or miscarriage has no basis.

And if something appears, in you or in the animal

Signs that need a doctor: fever or swollen glands after a scratch or bite, a round rash, persistent diarrhoea, or anything at all after an animal bite.

Signs that need a vet: repeated diarrhoea, skin patches, intense itching, or weight loss with no explanation.

In both cases the diagnosis belongs to the doctor — not to a pharmacy, not to a WhatsApp group, and not to an article, this one included.
