Immunity and Nutrition: What Actually Strengthens Your Pet

The phrase "boosts immunity" has been worn out by advertising. In truth immunity is not something you buy in a bottle; it is the result of simple, unglamorous things done daily. Here is what has a real effect and what is merely marketing.

The foundations with no substitute

Before any supplement, these are what matter.

Sufficient protein

Antibodies are themselves protein. An animal eating below its protein requirement has weaker immunity, quite simply.

Sufficient energy, not excess

A shortfall weakens immunity, and obesity weakens it too through low-grade chronic inflammation. Both harm. Work out the requirement: petzybites.com/pets-calculator

Gut health

Most immune cells sit around the digestive tract. Well-digested food and firm stools are a more important indicator than most people realise.

Sleep and calm

Chronic stress raises cortisol and suppresses immunity. An animal living amid constant noise and change falls ill more often.

Nutrients with a proven role

Not magic, but a deficiency genuinely harms.

Zinc

Directly involved in immune cell function and wound healing.

Vitamin E and selenium

Antioxidants that protect cells. An important note here: vitamin E oxidises with heat, so food stored in the heat loses it.

Omega 3

Reduces inflammation. Particularly useful alongside skin and joint problems.

Vitamin A

Important for mucous membranes, the first line of defence in the nose and gut.

Overdosing does harm

This is where well-meaning owners most often go wrong.

Vitamins A and D

These are stored in the body, and excess is genuinely toxic, unlike vitamin C which is excreted.

Calcium for puppies

Excess causes joint development problems. Do not give a calcium supplement alongside a balanced growth food except on veterinary instruction.

Mixing several supplements

It is very easy to exceed safe limits without noticing when giving vitamins alongside a fortified food.

Vaccination is not general immunity

Two different things that get confused.

Vaccination

Trains immunity against one specific disease. No food substitutes for it.

Nutrition

Makes the immune system capable of responding to the vaccine and producing enough antibodies.

Which means

A severely malnourished animal may not benefit fully from a vaccine. The two complement each other rather than replace each other.

Things that weaken immunity unnoticed

Everyday details.

Badly stored food

Heat oxidises fats and vitamins. The bag on the balcony has lost part of its value.

Stale water

Persistent mild dehydration strains the body. Change water daily, twice in summer.

Fleas and worms

They drain the animal continuously. A regular control programme matters more than any supplement.

Frequent food changes

Every change unsettles the gut. Choose a good formula and stay with it.
